Inspired by a previous B.L.I.S blog, I recently set out to do some “thrifting” of my own. What I found was a true gem right here in the Queen City. Whether you’re a novice vintage shopper or a vintage connoisseur, Hong Kong Vintage & Recycled shop in the Plaza Midwood/NODA area will appeal to every fashionista. The shop features clothing, jewelry, shoes, boots, accessories, furniture and house ware. The owner, Elizabeth, frequents estate auctions, yard sales, and the like to discover her finds.

There are two characteristics that set Hong Kong apart from the rest. First, the store’s well-kept chic interior invites you in and encourages you to stay for awhile. The clothes are neatly organized by color; the result is a visually stimulating palate. Before you know it, you’ll be gliding from feminine pink lacy dresses to edgy, dark blue leather pants. The shoes and purses are equally easy to sort through, and the unique jewelry pieces are neatly showcased in glass display cases.

Secondly, Hong Kong has a chic, user-friendly website (www.hongkongvintage.com) that offers online shopping (using e-bay as a conduit). All items have informative descriptions accompanied by high quality pictures. You can purchase your one-of-a-kind treasures without leaving the couch.

With average prices in the range of $14 to $50, Hong Kong fits every budget. On my visit, I purchased two skirts, a black pleated chiffon skirt and a summery green A-line retro skirt; each skirt was $14. Once the warmer weather returns, I plan on pairing the classic black pleated skirt with trendy accessories and chunky heels for a modern, fresh look.

If you’re a first-timer at thrifting, Hong Kong will be a great place to start and if you’re an expert thirfter, Hong Kong will be a welcomed break from the typical unkempt vintage shops. (Hong Kong is located at 1514 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205. I suggest parking in the lot located at the intersection of Central Avenue and Thomas Street.)

Wishing you hope & B.L.I.S.,

Monica

Instyle

A part of loving yourself is keepin’ it hot during all seasons! In this month’s Instyle, I answer your mid season fashion questions!

Q: In Charlotte, the weather in February is somewhat tricky. After the cold snap we have been seeing 70 degree temperatures some days. I leave the house with UGGs and look weird by mid day. What is an easy solution to these weather changes?

A: Great question! While we often see stars in LA wear the short skirts and UGG boots, unless you are 14, Charlotte’s fashion is a somewhat different landscape. A simple fix would obviously be to keep a spare pair of comfy shoes in the car. Make sure they are simple slides or something that can go with everything. If this is not an option, if you are not dressing up, I suggest donning a classic pair of Sperry’s (or look-a-likes) with any outfit. It is warm but at the same time if the temp goes up you won’t look you just got off the slopes.

Q: I have a cute bubble skirt that is covered with flowers. I see that retail stores are beginning to get in Spring items, but from what I see around Charlotte, people normally wait until mid March to start their spring wardrobe. How soon is too soon to break out the foliage?

A: Actually, you’re very fashion forward. When I worked at Ann Taylor, we began to get in our spring trunk show in January! It is never too early to start thinking about the next season; the key is doing it gradually for the Charlotte area. For instance, go for that cute flowered skirt, but pair two solids with it to make it more of a transitional piece than just a spring piece. For instance, some black leggings, ballet slippers and cute solid top would make this outfit trendy yet cute. Need to move it to a night out with the girls or a date, ditch the slippers and opt for some pumps, take your earrings off and go for a great necklace or keep them on and add a bangle. Pull your hair back with a small flower pin and you are ready to go! Stick with clean lines and trendy! Your skirt will be the focal point of the outfit, without looking out of season!

Q: I never am sure what to wear on a first date during this time of the year. I want to show off my figure without being cold! How can I balance the cool temps with a great date look?

A: Spending most of my fashionable years in Charleston, SC I always found it easy to dress for warmer temps; however, it is an interesting challenge to look great completely covered up. Here are some ideas! I have re-posted my photo from last month of a great date look for cold temps. The sweater dress is the definite go-to item for this year! Make sure it’s not to0 bulky by adding a great belt. Pair with leggings or skinny jeans and boots for a form fitting warm look. Believe it or not, an old school wool shawl can provide a sexy date look. Start off with a great colorful cami and black leggings, drape the shawl around your body and add a great belt. Ensure it does not look too homey by adding some trendy earrings and booties.

Living

Whether you’re partyin’ it up with the girls or getting cozy with that special someone, B.L.I.S has great suggestions on how to make the most of February love in the air!

1. Pole Dance Charlotte

Before you get your panties in a knot (no pun intended lol), pole dancing has become less taboo and more about fitness! Pole Dance Charlotte is a dance studio where you can have a great time expressing and embracing your “womanly” side while working on that arm and leg jiggle. Kelly, owner and operator of Pole Dance Charlotte started hosting girls’ night parties in homes, then expanded her business to two locations: a flagship studio in Lake Norman and one in historic South End. She encourages woman to enjoy working out by infusing sexy and flirty dance moves into fitness. There are open studio sessions, group classes and private sessions.

Kelly has hosted everything from mother-daughter bonding sessions to women’s ministries! I’ve taken two classes myself and can attest to the sexy but classy fun you’ll have! Not to mention, I’m sure you can get the hubby to help you with any skills you may need to work on! So if you are looking to spice things up or boycott V-day and do a girls’ night, Pole Dance Charlotte is worth a try!

2. Alvin Ailey Dance Company

February not only brings love but also Alvin Ailey to Charlotte! This great ballet company has historic roots in the African-American community and is a must see! I have my tickets and will have a full report at the end of the month. Here is the link for information on ticket sales. The dates are Feb 8 through 14! In Charlotte, most of the time, if the show does well they will extend the dates!

What to know more?

“Hailed by The New York Times as being ‘rich with fine performers these days, both established and rising stars,’ Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will soon bring the beauty, power, passion and artistry that are its hallmarks to audiences in Charlotte. Led by acclaimed Artistic Director Judith Jamison, the company will present a diverse repertory of revered classics, recent favorites, exciting premieres and dramatic new productions.

Founded in 1958 by Alvin Ailey, the troupe is known for its vibrant artistry and repertory as well as for Mr. Ailey’s humanist vision. The company of 30 dancers earned its nickname “Cultural Ambassador to the World” because of its extensive international touring. AAADT has performed for an estimated 23 million people in 71 countries worldwide. Upon every new stage they promote the uniqueness of the African American cultural experience combined with the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance.” (www.blumenthal.org)

3. Great Eats

If you want something high end, make reservations at Ruth’s Chris!

Ruth’s Chris is a 5 star steakhouse and has been around for years. The service is top of the line and the food, I can honestly say, is indescribable. The portions are very generous. They have options ranging from a tender rack of lamb to a basic grilled chicken. I had a center cut filet mignon with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. The steak was prepared in a lemon butter sauce and was brought to me hot off the grill.

They have an expansive wine list and you are treated to 3 people who are assigned your table for the utmost attention. My husband arranged for us to dine in the wine cellar of the restaurant. It was romantic and cozy, completely candlelit, and they did not charge us extra. The regular dining room features a cross between rustic Italian décor and a modern feel. There is no wait and the executive chef greets the customers. I recommend trying Ruth Chris for a special occasion with friends or a romantic dinner for two!

If you’re on tight budget, check out Mama Ricotta’s Italian Bistro.

This spot is a local favorite! Located in the Dilworth area of south Charlotte, it is the perfect blend of family style dining and casual cuisine. I ordered Mama Ricotta’s chicken lasagna and the flavors were excellent. The seasoning was not overdone and the dish came to the table still smoking hot. All ingredients are prepared fresh and they also have an expansive wine list. The menu is written in both Italian and English, so while you are waiting for your food, you can learn how to order your dishes in Italian! You can order two courses without breaking the bank and enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere. This is a great spot for a quick after work meal or a date night.

Quick Bite: Dan Morgan’s Cheese Mo’z

If you like see and be seen spots, former Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan’s Cheese Mo’z is for you! It is located in the new Blakeney shopping center in Ballentyne next to Cosmos. Morgan has said he’s always had dreams of owning a pizza joint!

Andre and I enjoyed a honey barbecue chicken pizza. The walls are covered with signed throwback jerseys of football players from the past and present. The music is pumping and the crowd ranges from the young professional to teenagers taking advantage of the great prices. It is crowded almost every weekend, so expect at least a 30 minute wait. The servers are personable and are well versed in the menu. I suggest trying the garlic knots as an appetizer! Save room, because the pizza pies are huge! It is a new spot, so it the website is not completly set up, but here is Creative Loafing’s review.

Beauty

Focus on your face this month!

First impressions are lasting! Usually, the first thing people notice about you is your face. In November 2009, B.L.I.S. I spotlighted a few cleansers to try if you’re looking for a new one. Though cleansing is crucial, it is not completely effective without the proper moisturizer. During the last three months I have tried several moisturizers, sampling everything from Harris Teeter brands to moisturizers from high end retail stores.

Of the eight moisturizers I tried, I choose the top three based on skin type, texture, longevity (lasting power throughout the day) and overall ease of use. I used each for a week and gave it a rating from 1 to 5 stars (5 being the highest).

Pick #3: Carol’s Daughter Face Butter

Having already used several of her products, I naturally had high expectations for her face butter. I purchased it at a flagship store in D.C. in July during my honeymoon but did not use it until recently. My skin type is combination (I am dry around my mouth/forehead, and oily around my T-zone) so they advised me to use the butter in my dry spots. For about a week, I used maybe a quarter size of the moisturizer. The product is natural, great for travel and deeply penetrates the skin. It provided moisture all day.The texture is thick but refreshing!

This product can likely last for about year since they recommend only using it on your dry spots. Out of my top three, this at the bottom of the list only because I had some concerns about people with oily skin using the product every day.

If your skin is oily, using this product every other day may provide better results. It can easily leave a film on the skin if overused. If you have combination skin or dry using this product daily would be great! It works best during the winter months. Carol’s Daughter face butter gets 3 stars.

Pick #2: L’Occitane: Shea Butter Ultra Rich Face Cream

This is an oldie but goodie and it continues to get better! I began using it back in college and still love it. With 25% shea butter, which is one of the best products for dry or dehydrated skin, it gives your face full moisture without the greasy feel. Its cool, whipped, texture goes on light and even. I recommend this moisturizer because it can also be used as a skin “treatment.”

On your designated beauty day, apply an ample amount and it will take on a facial mask feel and provide deep penetrating moisture to your skin. I also used it for other parts of my body! For daily use, apply a very small amount all over your face for a cool tingling sensation. Again, like most potent moisturizes, be sure not to over use if you do not have severe dry skin. L’Occitane Ultra Rich Face Cream gets 4 stars!

Pick #1 Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizer SPF 15

I am completely obsessed with this moisturizer! It is not only affordable but requires no beauty expertise to use. Aveeno has two other formulas - Clear Complexion, featuring salicylic acid, which aids in keeping skin acne free and Positively Radiant, which fights wrinkles and helps skin maintain a youthful look. I use this moisturizer daily with amazing results. It is very light to the touch and can applied all over the skin in any amount.

Another great point is that it also contains an SPF 15! Even in winter, it is important that you wear sunscreen daily. This protects against UV rays and its light texture wears easily under makeup. It also works well in both my oily T-zone and the dry skin around my hairline and mouth. Aveeno has a great reputation for high quality products at affordable prices. One bottle can last me at least five months. 5 stars!

Find your fashion style this year!

So often we try to define our style by looking at magazines and letting others tell us what’s “in” or “out.” While these are helpful tools, sometimes taking inventory of your own personality may result in the trendiest outfit around! Use your mind and search your body and soul to unearth your fashionista! Talk a little bit about what your style is and give a couple of examples what a personality type might mean fashion-wise – “You’re laid back and don’t care for heels, but that doesn’t mean you have to look like a tomboy, purchase a cute pair of ballet flats, etc.”

Here’s a few ways to get started:

1. Create your own shoes with ShoeDazzle.com! The Kardashian sisters echo my January advice the best. I am currently in the process of designing my own shoe on their website and having them send it to me! You can add charms and create your own look! Talk about stealing the show! If you are a shoe fanatic and want to be truly original, make this Web site a favorite!

2. Take a trip to Capit0l Boutique . A Charlotte favorite, Capital prides itself on original styles with a “Charlotte flair.” They’re not a very trendy shop, but more of a classic boutique with associates who focus on rounding out your closet with wardrobe staples instead of stacking it with random items that are here today, gone tomorrow.

Here is a review of Capitol boutique:

by Beths at Citysearch

I was pleasantly surprised to see it featured in a supplement to Marie Claire’s September’s issue called ‘

The New Way to Shop.’ Laura Vinroot Poole is featured as a ‘smart retailer’ and I’m not sure if the items shown are in her store,

but even if they aren’t, items she does have are sure to be just as awesome! I can’t wait to visit her store the next time I make the trek from Raleigh to Charlotte!

Pros: Awesome sense of fashion

3. Accessories: Big jewels are a do!

Big costume jewelery with simple white button downs are on the streets. Try Aldo, Handpicked or the Jewel box in Charlotte to get a chunky, costume necklace and pair it with a little black dress, a crisp white shirt or an off-the-shoulder sweater!

Several chains are also a do! Try linked chains with T-shirts for a quick glam look or to make a vintage outfit more current!

Living

With temps dipping to record lows this year, leaving the warmth of my fireplace was a challenge, but duty calls! I managed to rustle up one restaurant profile and review an old favorite for your enjoyment!

1. Luce Ristorante and Bar: Uptown Charlotte

Luce is the perfect place for a date or to grab a bite before a special event uptown. All of the seating is oversized and plush, which makes it easy to relax.

Dre and I ordered a special three- course meal with a vintage pinot grigio. It is customary to begin a genuine Italian meal with a pasta dish, so for our appeitizer we had a tricolor pasta dish with crushed peppers. I enjoyed ricotta raviolo with cherry tomateos and parmesan cheese. I topped my meal with a fabulous, caramal glazed slice of cheesecake.

During the summer and spring months live music plays on the patio and compliments the ”Italy in the 30s” vibe. The guests and staff were diverse and provided impeccable service. The table setting was formal but not lavish! I suggest brushing up on your table ettiquette before diving head first into your meal.

The executive chef is personable and introduced the selections himself! The price tag for dinner may be sticky for some, but don’t let that stop you! Instead, drop in for lunch and treat your taste buds to wonderful Italian without busting your budget.

2. Pewter Rose: South End

Pewter Rose is a staple for my family and friends. We fiIt is very affordable and diverse. My bridal shower was held at this restaurant and I loved it! I recommend the brunch. They have several selections, from an $8 “straight up breakfast” featuring southern stone ground grits, apple smoked bacon and hashbrowns, to a more sophisticated selection of eggs benedict and a spinach omlet.

The restaurant has an earthy but chic feel. The crowd is young professionals, bohemians and fun retirees who look like they may have participated in Woodstock or marched with Dr. King!

If you don’t want to drive, take the light rail from south Charlotte and get off at the East/West Blvd station. It is right on the street! You can dine in or out when the weather is warm, they serve scones to snack on, and the sweet tea is mixed with clear, sweet syrup instead of sugar, giving it a great taste! Love it!

3. Charlotte Restaurant Week

If you’ve been dying to try Luce or another Charlotte establishment but they don’t fit your budget, you’re in luck! Charlotte Restaurant Week starts today and runs through Jan. 31. Area restaurants are offering three-course meals for $30 – a steal at places like Blue or Morton’s! Click on the link for a list of participating restaurants and make your reservations today.

4. Now, burn those calories!!!

So you vowed to hit the gym in 2010 but lack the discipline? Try signing up for a class! Classes offer accountability and make exercising more enjoyable. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte offers a variety of classes various branches that cater to almost every interest and budget!

The Y offers something for everyone from the young dancer to the active older adult! I took two adult dance classes (ballet and hip-hop) and even got a chance to have a recital at the Belk theater uptown. I loved these classes! My teacher at the Harris Y, Mrs. Michelle, was classically trained at North Carolina Dance Academy. Not to mention, they encourage inviting friends and even husbands to watch certain classes! I now take a yoga class with Gina every Monday at the Morrison Y from 7 to 8 p.m. The Y is well worth the investment!

Preggers? Try a prenatal yoga class or water aerobics (with your physician’s permission, of course). The YMCA prides itself on caring for the mind, body and soul, which makes it a perfect pick for the January editions of B.L.I.S. Visit www.ymcacharlotte.org to see what’s on tap for this month and the next!

Until next week, live B.L.I.S.fully!

1. Maintain Your Beauty - Mind, Body and Soul!

My goal this year is to establish a workable beauty regimen and stick to it! Have you ever been in the drug store and suddenly the “I need a makeover” mood strikes and you end up spending a bunch of money on products you’ll use maybe once or twice? It happens to me all the time! To avoid this, decide on a daily beauty regimen that is both efficient and effective at maintaining your look so the need to make yourself over all the time dissipates.

Manicure Mondays: After the kids are asleep, hubby is taken care of, or work is over, vow to take 20 minutes to do an at-home manicure. If you’re trying to increase nail strength, put an extra layer of clear polish on your nails. To touch up old polish, rub a little cuticle oil on your nails. Olive oil is the best for healthy cuticles! After about three weeks, you will notice your nails are a lot nicer with little effort!

Take-away Tuesdays: This is your official shave day. If you need to shave more often, link it up with one of these other days. This could also be a day to get the brows taken care of! Here are some great local spots in different price ranges and a do-it-yourself video!

Womanly Wednesdays: Use this day to take care of your body through yoga, Pilates or whatever form of exercise/relaxation you choose. Afterward, apply a facial mask and peruse a fashion mag while waiting for your face to dry. Twenty minutes of rejuvenation will do wonders for your face! Below are a few great face emollients (masks?).

Tressy Thursdays: Take care of your hair needs today! For some, this may mean washing your hair, clipping the ends, or moisturizing/deep conditioning your scalp. No matter your hair type, take one day out of the week to assess your tresses and take care of them! Need a great stylist in the Charlotte area? The November issue of B.L.I.S has them!

Exfoliation Fridays: I have done this for a while! I know I talk about exfoliation a lot but I cannot stress it enough! Before you head out for Friday night festivities, take a second to exfoliate elbows, knees, and heels! Now your silky soft and ready to hit all of Charlotte’s hottest spots.

Not only will you look “pulled together” without a lot of effort, you will begin to learn and know yourself a lot more. My OB/GYN said a woman who knows her body can detect subtle changes for the better (or worse). Let’s spend a little time on us!

Ladies, the smokey look isn’t going anywhere, so you might as well learn how to do it! The key to achieving this is the use of good brushes and great shadows. Use these helpful hints to create the look below.

Purple Haze Recipe by Danielle Lennon

Ingredients

-Purple shadow/metallic or glitter color hints (Recommendations: Cover Girl eye shadow pack in Amethyst or All That Glitters by MAC cosmetics)

-Gray or a deep plum shadow (Recs: benefit Up in Smoke eye shadow or Embark by MAC cosmetics)

-A metallic soft/sheer shadow (Recs: Rice Paper by MAC cosmetics)

-A black shadow (Recs: Any dark shadow brand will do)

-Waterproof eyeliner (Recs: benefit Bad Gal Lash)

-Mascara (Recs: Cover Girl Lash Blast, MAC lacquer wear)

-3 Brushes (eyeshadow brushes from Target will do!)

Step 1: Make sure you begin with a clean face! And always being with your eyes first! Your foundation should be the last thing you apply so that you can use it to clean up any mistakes you may leave behind.

Step 2: Using the brush and the purple shadow, from the corner of your eye to the end glide the color on gently. For more pop, use a lot of shadow. Your eyelid ends when you begin to feel the crease.

Step 3: Use a napkin to clean the brush. Place the brush in the gray shadow and place this color in your crease, YES! The colors will be drastically different, this is okay. Use the shadow to coat your entire crease and add a little more toward your outer lid for a more dramatic look

Step 4: Using the soft metallic sheer shadow to highlight your brow bone right under your eyebrows, pay close attention to your arch. Placing light shadow in your arch makes for a more professional look.

Step 5: Using the first brush, get your black shadow and make boomerang formations toward the end of your eye between. Do not go above your crease.

Step 6: Use a bigger brush to blend your colors together, they should fade into each other and leave no lines!

Step 7: Line your lid with liquid eyeliner! Line the top to make a sexy cat lash line! Also line underneath your eyes. For a more dramatic look, go a little heavier on the eye liner.

Step 8: Smudge some of the liner into the make-up to give you a smokey and messy, but cute look.

Step 9: Apply two strong coats of mascara and you’re done!

Here is my purple haze eye on a night out with the hubby at Jade! Also check the video for other great tips!

CONGRATULATIONS BRANDI COLLIER of Lake Wylie, SC!

She is the winner of November’s Get Gorgeous Giveaway and received her pick of a Carol’s Daughter or Dylan’s Candy Bar Retreat gift pack!

“Thank you so much for giving helpful reminders on how to keep the ladies looking their very best from top to bottom. I started using the bronzer that you mentioned in the October blog and I love it! “
Brandi

Beauty

1. Skin

Let’s be honest ladies: have you ever jumped out the shower and decided to skip your lotion regimen because it was so cold? I must admit, it is very tempting at times. I did it one morning, forgetting I planned to go shoe shopping later with my friend, Rosalynn. I raised my jeans up to try on a great pair of knee high boots, and it looked like I had dusted my legs with flour! Yikes!

Dehydrated skin can be a major issue during the winter. The cold, windy temps rob the skin of natural moisture. And the time we spend covered up in layers doesn’t help.

The key to avoiding snowskin is plain diligent moisturization. While on your holiday shopping spree, hit up the stores for great buys at great prices! Bath & Body Works’ Aromatherapy line is discounted at several outlets and is always a great choice.

I am a loyal customer of Olay all day moisture rich lotion. It literally keeps me moisturized for 24 hours. When I take my evening shower, I can tell it’s still is working! Want something a little more high-end? Hit your nearest Sephora or Ulta beauty store and ask for philosophy moisture products.

Also, remember exfoliation is key to keeping a smooth, sultry, snow bunny body! Exfoliators work especially well around the bikini line and underarms, which at times may flake due to dryness. My fave? Almond Delicious Paste by L’Occitane. It provides a perfect balance of moisture and a delicious scent! According to the manager of L’Occitane’s Southpark Mall location, this has been the top selling exfoliator for the last three years!

2. Face issues

According to all the beauty mags, Neutrogena Acne Wash gets rave reviews! If Proactiv works for you, then stick with it. But if you’re still looking, I would try Carol’s Daughter Bring in the Moisture! I use Wash Away the Oil, because my T-zone is oily all day, every day!

3. Holiday party make up tips

Don’t look like a clown at the office Christmas party! While glitter and sparkles are all around you, don’t overdo it! Opt for make up that has a foil shimmer but is still relaxed!

Still on a foundation hunt hunt? I love Bare Minerals! Give the twirl, tap and swirl tactic a try! The time to try this is during the holidays when the gift specials are out and about! There is nothing wrong with buying a gift for yourself!

I am convinced this one of the best daily foundations out there. Where can you find it in Charlotte? Try the Bare Essentials store in Southpark Mall or Ulta cosmetics. It provides a quick holiday glow with a little bronzer! It also absorbs oil and serves as a great matte for problem skin! It gets five stars from B.L.I.S!

Living

The holidays are filled with gift giving, parties, travel and best of all, time with family and friends. Vow not to get caught up in the holiday hustle and bustle without taking in the small things that make the season bright.

Take your mother-in-law shopping and ask her about all her favorite holiday memories! Working late at the office? Bring in piping hot apple cider or cocoa and warm it up! If you’re not too busy, treat your colleagues to a batch of homemade (or store-made) Christmas cookies. It’s the thought that counts!

Exams got you stressed? Challenge your study buddies/roommates to a holiday sing-off in between study sessions! Schedule a Christmas craft or gift wrapping party to spend more time with girlfriends and make a dent in your to-do list.

Most importantly, set aside time to serve someone else less fortunate!

Establish traditions: Every holiday season, Andre and I get together with Emily and Bret, friends of ours, to see the “Nutcracker.” I look forward to it every year! I never thought of myself as someone who would enjoy the ballet, but it’s one of the highlights of my holiday season! Pick something you enjoy, that you can do share with family or friends

Holiday Shopping: Short on cash? Here are some other great holiday shopping ideas!

The holidays also give us an excuse to break away from ”uptown” dining and take in some comfort food. If banging pots and pans isn’t your style, try these great soul food options that make anyone feel home for the holidays. These are the Queen City’s finest Soul food stops!

La’Wan’s Soul Food Kitchen

This resturant was a perfect choice for warm food on a cold December day! It’s located on S. Tryon. While it has a humble overhead the treasure is in the food. The portions are generous and not overly flavored. It has a “Cheers” feel, as customers are greeted on a first name basis. Lawan’s also won a Steve Harvey Hoodie award for Best Soul Food restaurant.

Sadie’s Soul Food Resturant

Also a Hoodie award recipient, Sadies restaurant has beautiful curb appeal along with original soul food. It is one of the few places you can get chicken and sweet potato waffles in the Queen City! Everything is served with perfection!

Instyle

I don’t know if you guys heard, but all the glamour mags and fashion blogs say boot cut jeans have officially gone by the wayside. The boyfriend jean reigns. I almost lost it! I only have one pair of boyfriend jeans and to be honest, I don’t want my ankles out in the cold!

If you’re not ready to jump feet first into the trend, compromise. Wrap the bootcut part around your ankle, simulating skinny jeans, then don your favorite knee or thigh high, boot over the jeans. I learned this trick at a shoe store in Dothan, Alabama!

Holiday office parties: What’s too much?

Stay away from really, really trendy looks. In an office setting you want to look playful (you’re not at work) but at the same time, you don’t want to look like you are a “workin’ girl” on the weekends.

I opted for a silk black dress from H&M. It’s above the knee, which keeps it trendy, but with an empire waist that flatters my petite shape. It has the new “sweetheart” neckline that is gracing all the magazine covers. I have a black cover up short cardigan to tame it down, and a pair of my steve madden black and gray shoes with a great bow.

To add some spice, I paired it with a purple purse to complement my smoky purple and gray make up. To add sass, I added subtle fake eyelashes with a nude lip! And for pop, I wore rhinestone chandelier earrings and a vintage neclace that was a gift from my husband while we were dating. I’ll make a statement without being the talk of my huband’s office the next morning! It was a hit!

I recommend The Limited, Banana Republic, Ross, Old Navy, Steinmart and H&M for holiday looks. This is my dress for the holiday Christmas party! Please excuse my cute puppy in the background!

I want to hear from you! Post your fashion questions, dilemmas, or ideas! I also do one-on-one consultations for your fashion needs!

Step outside your comfort zone and try something new this month! Whether the change is as drastic as chopping off lengthy locks or testing a new lip gloss, switching it up every now and then refreshes you and keeps your look current!

Beauty

1.Hair

Fall is the perfect time to try a new haircut, because if it doesn’t quite cut it, you can cover it up or let it grow out underneath winter layering items such as hats and scarves!

If you’re not daring enough to try Rihanna’s mohawk, opt for a more subtle approach – add bangs or chunky auburn highlights. I got an asymmetrical cut (short and layered in the back and longer on the sides). The layers grow out prettily and the maintenance is simple. I was hesitant at first, but after seeing it under my favorite Aldo newsboy hat, I knew this was just the change I needed. Hair already short? Try extensions, which look cute under a crochet beenie or scarf.

Where can you get these looks in Charlotte?

Try the stylists at Varji and Varji in Southpark! They did all the hair for Charlotte Fashion Week and the models looked amazing! They have an excellent reputation. They are on the pricey side, but well worth it if you save your bucks!

I can also vouch for Carmen and Carmen, which has locations in Ballantyne and Southpark. Brandi did a wonderful job on my hair for my wedding day!

Don’t forget The Hair Down There!

Ladies, this is not the place for a winter coat! Because we are so layered during the winter, sweat builds up just as it does in the summer, which can lead to several ingrown hairs and other issues. Be sure that you don’t skip your wax or shaving routine just because the temeprature has dropped! Salons and spas notice a drop in business in the winter months due to the ”you can’t see it, so don’t bother it” mindset.

Want professional waxing tips?
2. Make-up

I decided to leave the comforts of home (MAC cosmetics) and find new products to add to my personal collection. I ventured to the benefit counter and am now hooked! Click here for my exclusive interview with Maggie and Annie Danielson, the owners of benefit! benefit’s parent company is Louis Vuitton and seems to be the boutique among make-up lines. Though counters are not available in every mall, they appear to have quite a cult following, in love with all its ‘bad gal’ ways.

They seem to specialize in brows! Start with Bad Gal lash (pictured below, left) mascara and California Kissin’ lipshine, which is supposed to make your teeth appear whiter. No lines and awesome customer service was a pleasant change from MAC. Mix it up!

There are two benefit counters in Charlotte - one at Southpark Mall and one at Carolina Place Mall. I went for a complete makeover and walked away a happy client! Shout out to the wonderful ladies at Southpark Mall (Jennifer, Ms. Wanda and Heather) and Susan, the feisty manager at Carolina Place who did my eyes for a recent sorority event!

Still want a change but can’t afford department store brands? Try a new eyeshadow shade from Cover Girl or L’oreal. The pigments in drug store makeup are neck and neck with department stores. Quick tip: Don’t assume you have to match your eyes with your outfit! If you’re wearing black, try a smoky, purple eye or even a pearl shimmer. Just apply it to the brow bone for a different look.

3. Nails

Painting each nail a different color is all the rage! I usually maintain a French manicure but have committed to trying this trend. If anything, it makes you feel better. Some celebrities have their significant other’s name airbrushed on their nails! Go for the best. This is the season for green. Green is the color of change and is synonymous with spring. Try O.P.I. shades sold in your local nail salon or Sally Hansen shades at the local drug store.

Here is an excerpt from O.P.I.’s beauty blogger, Suzi, about their newest fall nail color:

In style

Since this month is about changes, your closet is a great place to start. Take a moment to evaluate your life – does your wardrobe reflect your current status? Are you a college senior about to plunge into corporate America? Maybe it’s time to take six of those 16 party tops to Plato’s Closet and exchange them for a couple pairs of slacks and a great interview suit. Switching from corporate to a more relaxed job setting? Incorporate some really chic accessories like a bracelet with rhinestone accents and a clutch purse. Want to change your state of mind and your body? Make room in your closet for great yoga and workout gear! Target has an array of stylish, yet comfortable workout apparel to help keep you motivated.

1. Change essentials

Seen the new slouch boot? I have a feeling this trend won’t change anytime soon! These boots look great with jeans, dresses and skirts! I have the boots pictured to the left in gray and can’t go anywhere without getting compliments! I can wear them knee-high or slouch them almost to the ankle for a different look. I normally go for a traditional knee high boot during colder months but this is a great change!

My gray boots!

2. Retro changes

Plaid: From Country to Couture!

Plaid shirts with a cute belt are in! This is both a fashion upgrade and change. How to wear it? Try checkboard plaid that is one color and black. Once you’ve found the perfect plaid shirt/dress, tweak it for work and play. At work, wear with creased black slacks and a skinny belt for sensible sophistication.

Meeting friends after class or after work? Lose the slacks and go for sexy black leggings, slouch boots or gladiator platform stilettos. Opt for a wider, eye-catching belt and you’re ready to go. For a simpler look, wear with boyfriend cut jeans and great heels, or a sexy boot cut jean and peep-toes! I’ve seen them in several colors at Francesca’s Collections and at LA East in Fort Mill.

 The Comeback of the One-Strap

The one-strap top may be back! I’ve seen supporters of the look in several issues of fashion magazines, which can be worn under a blazer during the day, or worn out for a night on the town. Check area boutiques or forever 21, which has a great selection. I got my top from a local botique uptown calle Belle Veille! It was maybe $30.00 and they only had 3. I love one of a kind great buys.

Also, a great place to find retro ways to change your wardrobe is to check your mother’s closet! Yes, I said it! You usually can find great styles at no cost to you!
